Thailand Scuba Diving Dive Site Directory

Area Krabi
Site Koh Poda Nai
Location The Largest of the offshore islands and islets, just over 6km south of Ao Nang beach
Depth Average 5m / Maximum 12m

Description

The northern beach of Koh Podah Nai slopes gently down to an extensive reef-flat, which continues outwards for a further 50m before it reaches an almost sheer slope which drops to 12m. At high tide the corals are covered with only 2m of water or less; at lower tides many coral heads actually break the surface.

These conditions render this particular area suitable only for snorkeling. Better corals and marine life are found a little way out. The reef consists mainly of small clusters of staghorn, cauliflower and a number of leaf and plate corals.

There are many narrow crevices and ledges that cut into the rocky walls of the island itself - these are well worth investigating as tigertail seahorses often conceal themselves within.

Whale sharks aren't sighted here so often, but who knows, maybe Lady Luck will favour you ....

Watching out for the Reef: Coral Conservation Guide for Divers

• Avoid touching live corals. You can kill them with your bare hands.
• Keep your gauge and octopus hoses close to yourself and prevent them damaging the reef.
• Secure your weight belt. Dropping of the weights can destroy the reef.
• Refrain from chasing or touching animals, especially manta rays and whale sharks.
•Maintain a comfortable distant and enjoy
watching them!

Many divers unintentionally destroy corals whilst diving. Here are a few guidelines on how to avoid doing so.

• Use the correct amount of weight to aid in your buoyancy.
• Control your fins; keep them away from the reefs and avoid kicking sand onto the corals.
• Do not pick up organic objects (dead or alive) from the sea. Likewise, please do not buy shells or other decorative products made from sea animals.
• Do not stand or rest on the stone-like corals. After all, they are living animals.
