The dive scene at Mabul, located 25 minutes from Sipadan, is very different - the island is known for muck diving, which is a better experience than it sounds. Whilst the visibility is low, there is an abundance of small and bizarre-looking species, such as frogfishes, scorpionfishes, harlequin shrimp, boxer crabs, fire gobies, ghost pipefish and crocodilefishes … the list could go on - it would be easier to list the macro species not found at Mabul.
The shallow beauty of Mabul will also appeal to snorkellers. The Sipadan Water Village resort, perching entirely on stilts, is the up-market accommodation choice and is a very special place, offering an immersion in nature so soul-satisfying that it more than makes up for the lack of luxury facilities. www.sipadanwatervillage.com.
