Indigo Pearl offers something different. Coming from an engineering background, this writer was stunned to see a 20 feet tall Lister engine in the reception area, sitting there as if it were the most natural thing in the world to find an antique steam engine in a luxury resort lobby.
The surprises did not cease there, though, as the lobby area is bedecked with cobalt blue-coloured settees flanking heavy coffee tables adorned with various cast iron tools and machinery, ice grinders and fruit squeezers. Every corner of this resort is fascinating and there is a surreal twist put on even the simplest of items; for example the showers around the pool are made from 10 inch diameter cast iron industrial water pipes with wheel valves to turn them on.
The menus in the restaurant are clad in perforated steel sheets screwed onto a double hinged spine.
The inspiration for this ‘industrial chic’ came from Phuket Island’s history of tin mining, part of the reason why it is so prosperous today. The owner of the Indigo Pearl is a descendent of the person who made it so.
There are 3 pools around the grounds, none of which have stair or ladder access; instead they gently slope away from the ground. Behind the largest of these pools are grassed terraces with a performance stage at the bottom suitable for events and weddings alike.
The design of the spa, pictured left, continues the avant-garde theme.
There are 5 room types; Pearl Bed Suites, Premium Pearl Bed Suites, D-Buk Suites, Private Pool Pavilions, and The Pearl Shells. Within the rooms the industrial theme is kept to a minimum favouring instead homely Thai touches.
Pearl Shell Suite
The Pearl Shell is the top room type here, decadent, opulent, and a little intimidating (so seem the warehouse-style doors which open into the private massage room), it has a large balcony with inviting chaise longs, and a private Jacuzzi. Plush and well-designed, this is a suite for deep-pocketed honeymooners. Each Pearl Shell Suite is a unique design statement filled with personality, sensuality and original artwork. With a butler on call and every amenity at your fingertips, take a break from reality to live life in luxury for a while.
These are good mid-range choices, offering at least reasonable value for money in this pricey resort.
They are stylishly equipped and fitted.
Pearl Bed Suite
The Pearl Bed Suite is the standard room type here. It is no less opulent or decadent than the Shell, only smaller, both in floor plan and budget.
The above rates are net per room per night and inclusive of service charge.
