This excellent resort is located on Phak Nam beach on Koh Phi Phi's eastern coast, a twenty minute boat ride from the party mania on the island's central ithsmus.
The contrast could not be greater between this resort atmosphere and the ithsmus's frenetic activity, heaving crowds and popping nightlife scene. At the Relax bay, a typical Thai laid-back atmosphere and friendly informality is in precedence.
If you are looking for a peaceful mid-range Phi Phi beachfront resort away from the crowds, then this is your best choice. While the nightlife is low-key and mellow here, the beach bar is a friendly place to hang out in high season, when it's easy to meet new people and relax over a few cocktails or beers.
Aside from the great location, the Relax Bay has another great thing going for it, which is its lovely bungalows. If you like a clean, smart, fan, wooden beach bungalow, these are hard to beat anywhere in Thailand.
Each bungalow has 2 large windows to admit lots of light and air, and a romantic and comfortable 4-poster bed supporting the mosquito net. The large balconies are furnished with a pair of Thai-style collapse-cushions, are lovely and breezy places to hang out, and are particularly romantic spots at night.
The bungalows have a pleasingly rustic feel, with in-the-round wood supporting thatched roofs, and as at June 2010 are in very good condition.
Paradise Beach Bungalow
There is not much point in booking one of these, they are the same as the Coral Beach Bungalows (see below), but have marginally the best locations. All the Coral Beach Bungalows have great locations, though, so there's really not much point in paying extra.
Coral Beach Bungalow
These are front row beachfront bungalows and very popular.
Early booking is essential. Nature lovers can bliss out in nature's bossom here, with hardly a sign of concrete or plastic in sight.
These are slightly smaller and simpler than the Coral Beach Bungalows, and have smaller terraces.
If you're after absolute beachfront, they are great value for money as well as being clean and smart.
These are the same as the Coral Beach Bungalows, but located behind them, on the second and third rows. Some of them have reasonable sea-views, we particularly like the two second row bungalows at the southern end of the reosrt. If you can get one of these two, there's not a huge point in paying extra for a Coral Beach Bungalow. Even the worst of the Relax Bungalows, however, are still light and airy places to stay, even if they have small or non-existent sea-views.
These are on the back row and have no sea-view, but are still very pleasant places to stay.
If you can't afford one of the more expensive bungalows, never mind, you'll still have a nice time staying here.
The image on the left shows the construction style of all the bungalows in the resort - lovely, isn't it ?
The above rates are net per room per night and exclusive of breakfast. Rates are based on a double bed, not 2 singles, for which there is an extra charge.
