Pacific Ocean: Japan, Indonesia, Australia and the Hawaiian Islands Western Atlantic: Canada to North Carolina, USA to Venezuela. Eastern Atlantic: St. Helena Island. Indian Ocean: off Kenya to off East London, South Africa.

Blue to greenish above, silvery below; caudal fin bright red, tips of dorsal rays reddish; opercle with small black spot.

Occurs in mid-water or near the bottom; also near the surface. Feeds on smaller planktonic invertebrates, primarily copepods. Marketed fresh.
