Pacific Ocean: East Indies to the Society Islands, north to the Mariana Islands, south to Queensland; Mariana and Marshall Islands in Micronesia. Also in southern Japan. Reported from India.

Body pale, almost white, with dark snout and distinctive marking on back of head.

Inhabits muddy to sandy inshore areas and occasionally forages in the open at night. Burrowing species. Caught rarely with gill net from the muddy shallow bottoms of Ryukyu Islands.
