Indo-Pacific: East Africa to the Hawaiian Islands, north to southern Japan, south to Australia.

Preopercle edge smooth or sometimes denticulate in juveniles. There is a distinct horizontal groove in front of eye. Dorsal and anal fins without scales. Scale rows on back parallel with lateral line. Color dark green to bluish or blue-grey.

Inhabits open waters of deep lagoons, channels, or seaward reefs.
