Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea and East Africa to Papua New Guinea, north to southern China, south to New South Wales, Australia.

Dark grey to blackish brown above, white to yellowish below.

Inshore and intertidal species known to enter freshwater in some areas. Found in shallow bays, estuaries, and lagoons. Often on the bottom with its saw elevated at an angle to the body axis.
