Indo-West Pacific: southern India, throughout Indo-Malayan region, northern Australia, New Guinea and the Philippines, reports from Fiji. Further study is required to determine if the population spanning this wide range comprise one single species.

Found in coastal waters. Stays near the substrate and feeds on fish, crustaceans, chaetognaths, nematodes, bivalves, and gastropods.
