Western Pacific: Ryukyu and Ogasawara Islands to Rotuma, south to Rowley Shoals in the eastern Indian Ocean and the Great Barrier Reef. Recently recorded from Tonga.

Has same general appearance as T. caesiura and T. naude.

Inhabits clear coastal reefs, near sponges to about 30 meters depth. Usually hovers upside-down in small caves in coral reefs.
