Indo-West Pacific: Red Sea to Inhaca Island and east the Philippines and New Guinea, north to Japan, south to northern Australia.

Recognized by the distinctive white leading edge on ventral fins.

Found in fairly deep (50 m) sheltered water. In schools above sandy bottom near a sea anemone in bays to 80 m offshore.
