Bouldering in Thailand - Koh Tao, Koh Lao Liang, Railay

The best beach bouldering in Thailand is on Phra Nang beach on Railay, on Koh Lao Liang and on Koh Tao. As much bouldering as you like can be incorporated into your climbing itinerary.

Thailand Bouldering Jargon

Thailand bouldering routes are most commonly referred to as “problems,” because the nature of the climb is often short, curious, and much like problem solving.

Bouldering in Thailand - Safety

On smaller boulders without too many "problems," the sport can be reasonably safe for a well-conditioned individual. Most boulderers climb with a spotter, and place a mat where it will hopefully cushion a fall. Not surprisingly, a few boulderers sometimes attempt "problems" well beyond the reach of their spotter, and rely on mats that do very little to protect falling skeletal structures from sudden stops on level portions of the planet.

To reduce the risk of injury after a fall, climbers rarely go higher than nine feet above the ground. Anything over 21 feet is generally considered to be “free soloing,” and such climbers are often referred as “highball boulderers” (or “death-wish lunatics” for short). Bouldering in Thailand, if undertaken sensibly, is a safe sport.

The spotter generally directs the climber's body toward the crash-pad during a fall, while protecting the climber's head from hazards. The spotter’s job isn’t to catch the boulderer – unless the spotter is much heavier than the boulderer and enamoured of her (or, perhaps more unusually, of him).

Boulder Thailand - Tip

BREATHE!!! When you boulder in Thailand, remember to regulate your breathing. No holding of breath. No panting. Breathe in through the nose and exhale through the mouth during the bouldering.
